The last week has consisted of shopping for baking supplies, watching baking videos, baking cakes, dreaming of cakes and eating plenty of cakes!! I think I'm still on a sugar high :) Thank god for youtube and the cake decorating tutorials.
It all started 6 weeks back when I committed to making a friends child's birthday cake, for his first birthday ever!! (no pressure right?) The first 4 weeks I was thinking 'sure, I can pull this off, can't be that difficult?' Oh how I was so wrong, cake making involves a serious amount of time and preparation, let alone the creative elements, accuracy in placing the cake, attention to detail, timing, I can go on! In the final week, all these skills needed to be executed and fast, I was running out of time. I baked the cakes during the week, so I would be free to ice and stack the night before, however the day before as I was starting to piece it all together but my youtube cake guru expected more! My boyfriend was sent out for a shopping mission whilst I started preparing, 4pm the day before the party I might add. Once back I had 2 more cakes to make, doubling the mixture, so my cakes in total considered of 4 cakes with 2 doubled for size! This is when it got interesting.. I had to ice the cakes to stop all the crumbs from sticking to the fondant and fridge for 30 minutes. Trying to fit 4 extremely large cakes in the fridge is a difficult task in it's self.
The next 4 hours considered off needing, shaping, colouring the fondant till I was able to come up with a design that was going to work :) I finished the top cake first and put aside to set, whilst I worked on the bigger bottom half before calling it a night. The next morning still on a sugar high from an overload of cake mixture, I stacked the cakes! This was a seriously stressful and rewarding moment. Once the polls were in and I had roughly mapped out the positioning, it was time! My brave boyfriend helped my shaky hands lower the cakes together so it formed a 2 tier cake, and it worked!! I was so pleased, just had to add final touches (my previously made elephant the week before), my balloon, letters and candle. Everybody loved the final result including me :) The cake project was a success and I was pleased!
My life really does revolve around food! I love learning about produce, reading new recipes, trying to create my own. Here are some of my food, travel and creative journeys, I hope you find them interesting or just delicious!
